    Curriculum Process
    The HW Mountz curriculum is developed using a backward design process based on the 2009 New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) and the 2010 National Common Core Standards (NCCS).  When designing units of study for each grade level and subject area:
    • Data, both in grades and in anecdotal form, is collected during instruction todetermine how well students are meeting the goals so adjustments can be made in the instructional plan to help students successfully meet the goals of the units as evaluated in the assessments
    • Relevant 21st century skills (http://www.p21.org/)and technology applications are integrated into the units of study to help students gain skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and technology.
    • Interdisciplinary connections are made between units to model the integration of knowledge and skills in the real world.
    While our curriculum framework is established based on the standards, http://www.state.nj.us/education/cccs/ , as our teachers engage in on-going professional development, revisions and adjustments are made to the curriculum documents.  As the curriculum is continuously enhanced based on the professional development of our teachers (See Professional Teams below) in the area of curriculum and instruction, the units of study will be updated for public viewing.
    The Common Core State Standards Initiative strongly informs the Spring Lake School District Curriculum and precisely guides the focus of professional development for our teachers.  It will also become the focus of standardized assessments in 2014-2015 under the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).  For a variety of resources on the Common Core State Standards, College and Career Readiness Standards, and the PARCC please visit our Standards Link.

    Professional Teams
    The professional community at HW Mountz School has made it part of its mission (Click here to view the HW Mountz Mission Statement) to continuously collaborate to enhance the development, delivery, and assessment of this curriculum through a focus on research-based best practices in the area of student learning.   The greatest impact on our curriculum and student achievement comes through the dialogue between teachers within and across grade levels and subjects.  This dialogue results from continual analysis of data on students performance.  This data is generated through state standardized tests, district benchmark assessments, and the on-going collection of data during instruction in the classroom.  During the 2012-2013 School Year our teachers are involved in numerous Professional Teams focused on enhancing curriculum, informing instruction, and generating a safe and secure environment for all students to learn.
